The thoughts and movements of black women and men in southern Brazil; black lives and experiences between slavery and post-abolition; and culture, thought and black sociability in Porto Alegre are some of the themes covered by the book Racism, power relations and black history in Porto Alegre: 19th-20th centuries. In total, there are 13 articles written by researchers who have been studying racism and black history in Porto Alegre during this period. Among the researchers and author of one of the book’s articles is professor Arilson dos Santos Gomes, from the Humanities Institute of the University of International Integration of Afro-Brazilian Lusofonia (Unilab).

Gomes contributes to the book with the article entitled To overcome difficulties: Sociedade Floresta Aurora and its autonomy in search of its new headquarters (1958-1972). “It deals with the nuances of the trajectory of the oldest black social club in Brazil, created in 1872, by free black men and women, and which in 2022 celebrated its 150 years of existence”, contextualizes the professor.

The work is organized by José Rivair Macedo (UFRGS), Paulo Roberto Staudt Moreira (UFPEL) and Vera Barroso (CHC Santa Casa). And it has a preface by the director of the National Archive Ana Flávia Magalhães Pinto, who will hold the book launch conference in person on November 27th, at 3:30 pm, in Porto Alegre.
