The “Iron Ones” and FC St. Pauli meet on equal terms. A stroke of genius shocks the guests – who never recover from it.
First win for Union Berlin in the still young Bundesliga season. The “Iron Ones” won 1-0 (1-0) against promoted FC St. Pauli at the start of the second match day and are thus at least temporarily the new leaders. Benedict Hollerbach made the decision with a great long-range shot (34th). The promoted team from Hamburg, on the other hand, suffered their second defeat in the second game.
In the first meeting between the two clubs in the top German league, both sides fought hard and there were few chances to score. This made it all the more surprising that Hollerbach took the lead after a corner. The striker shot from around 18 meters and was lucky that the ball was deflected past St. Pauli’s goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, who was unable to save it.
Even after the break, it remained a tough game in which the hosts seemed a little more dominant, but without appearing dangerously in front of the Hamburg goal. There were therefore not many goal-scoring opportunities or top-class scoring chances. Union defender Danilo Doekhi narrowly missed the St. Pauli goal with a curling shot in the 51st minute.
The visitors gained a little more momentum when Elias Saad and Oladapo Afolayan were substituted on. The two promotion heroes brought speed down the flanks. Although St. Pauli now had more possession, the visitors were unable to score a goal despite four minutes of stoppage time. The “Kiez-Kickers” were too inconsistent in attack, and the team’s attempts were therefore too harmless overall. Union’s goalkeeper Rönnow thwarted the last chance shortly before the end.
