The CDU and CSU are preparing for the next federal election campaign. This should also include a concept for changes to income tax.

According to CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann, the Union wants to go into the 2025 federal election with proposals for tax reform – and is also looking at the top tax rate. “We will make a surcharge this year. We will then go into the election campaign with that,” Linnemann told the “Rheinische Post” (Monday).

The amount at which the top tax rate applies must be increased. “It cannot be the case that someone who earns a little more than an average wage is asked to pay like a top earner,” criticised the Secretary General. This should be changed “so that the top tax rate only applies from 80,000 euros or more”.

The threshold at which the top tax rate of 42 percent is due was recently raised. According to the Federal Ministry of Finance, it will be levied from this year onwards on annual incomes of 66,761 euros.

Linnemann made it clear that the concept also includes considerations for a reform of corporate taxation.
