Kevin Volland has something ahead of most of his new colleagues at Union Berlin. He has already played in the Champions League. The striker now wants to fulfill a Spanish dream himself.

Kevin Volland hopes for absolute top opponents for 1. FC Union in the Champions League and wishes himself Real Madrid or FC Barcelona as opponents.
“I’ve already played the Champions League for two years. It was the same in the first year, you want the big things,” said the new offensive player of the Berlin Bundesliga club before the draw for the group stage of the premier class on Thursday (6 p.m.) in Monaco.

Volland switched from AS Monaco to the Irons a few weeks ago. In the Champions League, the 31-year-old played a total of twelve times for Bayer Leverkusen in 2016/17 and 2019.
Like Robin Gosens, Josip Juranovic and Robin Knoche, he is one of the few players in coach Urs Fischer’s squad who already has experience in Europe’s most important football competition. “Just playing the Champions League for the guys who haven’t played it before is awesome,” said Volland.
Union in the worst pot 4
At the ceremony in the Principality’s Grimaldi Forum, Union is a newcomer in the premier class in the worst pot 4. This could result in very attractive groups: FC Barcelona, Manchester United, AC Milan or Manchester City, Real Madrid and Lazio Rome would be possible constellations. However, a rather easy group with Feyenoord Rotterdam, FC Porto and Red Star Belgrade would also be possible.
“If you get into a group where you can realistically survive, then there’s still something to play in the last 16 in the Champions League,” said Volland. But: “Many want the big names and there will be two big ones, I think,” he added. And anyway: “The Champions League alone, no matter where you play, is cool.” (dpa)
