If new technologies are used in farming then it can surely be made a profitable deal. This has been proved by ‘Hirod Patel’, a young farmer from Ratanpur, Odisha. Today people come from far and wide to see Herod’s fields and this is because the vegetables in his fields do not grow in the ground but on the pond.
You are shocked, actually Herod has built four different ponds in his 10 acre farm and by building sheds over these ponds, he is getting a good yield of vine vegetables. On the other hand, they are also earning extra income by doing fish farming in the pond. All this became possible because of his thinking and desire to do something different.
When Herod joined his father in farming about eight years ago, his father traditionally grew only rice. Due to which much profit was not being made. But Herod first started growing seasonal vegetables by making a pond in the field. But to make proper use of the space, they first planted big trees like banana and coconut around the pond. During this time, he got the idea of building a shed on the pond and growing vine vegetables. For this he also took special information from the Agricultural Science Center and started a new effort.
Now he is able to get a good yield of vegetables on his pond. Herod has also built a boat himself to pluck vegetables over the pond. Sitting in it, he goes to pluck vegetables like ridge gourd, bitter gourd and bottle gourd.
His initiative as a young farmer has become an inspiration for many people today. Today his farm has become a laboratory for other farmers and agricultural scientists also come to see it.
