United front of Municipal Authority – umbrellas against the sudden decision to transfer the management and exploitation of the island’s beaches to ETAD

by time news

The sudden passing of a provision (article 71 of the law passed on 23.03.2021) which removes the management of these beaches from the Municipality of Rhodes and the Greek State, and their subjection to the exclusive jurisdiction of the EDPS.

The Mayor Mr. Antonis Kambourakis proposed the issuance of a resolution for the withdrawal of the article in question, which as he said “comes in complete opposition to the Local Society and constitutes a directly hopeless anti-development action, which is directed specifically against the island of Rhodes and our local tourist product”.

Mr. Kambourakis emphasized that the above regulation should be immediately revoked and the previous administrative competence of the OTAs and the Greek State restored and his proposal was unanimously accepted by the municipal council.

In more detail, the Mayor, Antonis Kambourakis, stated the following:

The outstanding beaches of the Municipality of Rhodes (from the facilities of the NOR to the “Kato Petres”, from the Cretiki to the coastal zone of Ialyssos, the beach of Afandou, the beach of Tsambika, etc.), for decades belong to the successful management of Municipality of Rhodes and the Greek State (Real Estate Service, Ministry of Finance). These are clean coastlines and clean beaches, i.e. public areas, protected by the Constitution of the Hellenic Republic. For this reason, their management is always done with a higher time horizon of three years, like every other coastline and beach in the Greek territory.

The Municipality of Rhodes for a number of years has proven that it manages these beaches successfully and with excellent cooperation with the local community, with multiple benefits for the tourism development of our island, the financial support of the Municipality and the State and the well-being of its society island.

In order for these beaches to be today’s “apple of contention” and attractive tourist resorts, some with seriousness and perseverance worked hard for it, and these are the people of Rhodes and the society of Rhodes.

The sudden passing of a provision (article 71 of the law passed on 23.03.2021) which removes the management of these beaches from the Municipality of Rhodes and the Greek State, and their subjection to the exclusive jurisdiction of the ETAD, is in complete contradiction to the Local Society and directly recommends hopeless anti-development energy, directed specifically against the island of Rhodes and our local tourism product.

We recommend the issuance of a Resolution, which will be sent to the honorable Prime Minister, to the competent Ministers and to the Dodecanese & Cyclades MPs, in order to immediately revoke the above regulation and to restore the previous administrative competence of the OTAs and the Greek State.
