The saga on its way to an end? According to a report at Athletic, Manchester United have agreed with Ralph Rangnick, who will take over as coach until the end of the season. He will replace Ola Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked last week after a bad season opener and a string of poor results in recent weeks. The team management contacted the coach as early as the beginning of the week, and after rejecting the initial offer, he received improved terms.

Rangnik, who currently serves as head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow, will be the Red Devils’ new coach for just six months, and immediately thereafter will become a club adviser for two years. According to the report, in the game against Chelsea Michael Carrick will in any case be the one to stand on the lines.

The 63-year-old German is considered one of the most esteemed football figures in Europe, but has never coached a truly great club. He is known as the “Professor”, and received his first professional coaching role at the age of 39, in a third-division Hall team. He coached Schalke from 2004-2005. Finished in second place in the Bundesliga and was sacked a season later. Between 2006–2011 he coached Hoffenheim from the third division, promoted it to the second Bundesliga and then to the senior division.

For the past decade he has served as the sporting director of Red Bull Salzburg and Leipzig, which he has also coached for two different terms. He is considered one of the most influential figures in leading German coaches, including Thomas Tuchel, Jürgen Klopp and Julian Naglesman, and will now stand the test for the first time at the top of European football club.
