Mugs, plates, a quiche… And now a special piece. The Royal Mint, the British agency responsible for minting the local currency, is issuing five million 50 pence (centimes) coins this Thursday in a special edition that pays tribute to the coronation of Charles III, which took place on May 6.

The visual of this coin represents Westminster Abbey on the reverse side, where the coronation took place, and the face of Charles III on the reverse side. This will allow the British to “find a piece of history in their currency”, explained Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coins at the Royal Mint, in a press release.

A new edition after the first pieces launched in December

This coin, designed by Natasha Jenkins, was announced in April by the Royal Mint. The designer then explained that she had to show particular meticulousness with regard to the important details of the architecture of Westminster Abbey.

As of December, a first series of coins with the effigy of Charles III had been minted and put into circulation after the arrival on the throne of the monarch, of 50 pence (centimes). In the process, the visual of the corresponding banknotes had been unveiled, but these should not appear in British shops and banks before mid-2024.

These new coins of King Charles III are not, however, about to replace those bearing the effigy of Elizabeth II: 27 billion of them are still in circulation in the United Kingdom, underlines the BBC.
