Holder of a doctorate in neuropharmacology from the Louis Pasteur University of Strasbourg, Professor Azzouz worked at the gene therapy center in Lausanne, Switzerland, before joining Oxford BioMedica plc in 2000 where he worked as a senior scientist and being named director of neurobiology in 2003.

He joined the University of Sheffield in 2006 where he worked in the chair of translational neuroscience, before heading the Department of Research and Innovation.
