Injuries, mental health problems, stress… A study carried out in the United Kingdom shows a record rate of sick leave for 15 years. Results which suggest that the Covid-19 episode has definitively shaken up the world of work.

“Most organizations pay attention to the well-being of their employees”, but “the considerable increase in absences across all sectors is a cause for concern”, points out Rachel Suff, a head of the human resources sector association CIPD.

The latter led a study with medical services company Simplyhealth, serving 6.5 million employees across 918 organizations. Their results show that, due to health reasons, employees in the UK were absent an average of 7.8 days last year. This is two more than the pre-Covid figures.

As reported by AFP, short-term absences are often due to minor illnesses or injuries, but also to mental health disorders. As for absences that last, this time it is mental health disorders which take precedence over the rest in the justifications, followed by serious illnesses (cancer, heart attack, etc.). The study shows that all this is exacerbated by increasingly frequent reports of stress: more than 76% of managers reported absences due to stress over the past year.

Unsurprisingly, this jump in sick leave contributes to a tight labor market, with employers struggling to recruit or retain employees. To respond to this phenomenon, organizations are focusing on the development of their internal well-being strategy.
