It is a crime that shakes public opinion across the Channel. Two 12-year-old boys charged with the murder of a 19-year-old young man, Shawn Seesahai, appeared in a British court on Friday in a new case of stabbing or stabbing, a phenomenon that is on the rise in the United Kingdom.

Presented before a judge at Birmingham Magistrates Court, the two boys simply spoke to confirm their identities, which cannot be revealed for legal reasons.

They were arrested by police at their home on Tuesday, accused of stabbing Shawn Seesahai on Monday evening in Wolverhampton, a city in central England. Called to the scene, emergency services found the young man dead. The two boys are also charged with possession of a machete.

Their lawyers explained that they denied the facts and the judge explained to them that they would be kept in detention in a juvenile center until the next hearing scheduled for Monday.

99 young people stabbed to death in one year

The United Kingdom is experiencing an increase in knife violence, which often involves young people. According to official figures, 99 young people under the age of 25 died from stabbings in England and Wales between March 2022 and March 2023.

50,000 knife or stabbing attacks were recorded over the same period, an increase of 5% over one year and 75% over ten years, according to the National Statistics Office. The death of a 15-year-old girl, stabbed on the way to school in London last September, particularly moved the country. His alleged murderer, a 17-year-old teenager, will be tried next April.

The age of criminal responsibility is 10 in England and Wales, meaning that a child over the age of 10 can be arrested and tried if they commit a crime.

However, they are treated differently from adults, including different sentences and detention in specific secure centers and not in prisons. They are tried by a juvenile court (Youth Court).
