DISPATCH — A group of American billionaires has bought some 20,000 hectares of land in the California countryside from farmers to grow a futuristic city. The project is reminiscent of “The Line” in Saudi Arabia.

Jan Sramek, a 36-year-old former Goldman Sachs trader, began selling his idea in 2017. He quickly convinced Michael Moritz, a billionaire venture capitalist. THE New York Times reports that they will both present the project as a “spectacular investment”, bringing together a dozen other ultra-rich Americans. Together, they create Flannery Associates, and it is under this entrepreneurial identity that they will discreetly devour the Californian lands.

In a few years, they spend 800 million dollars to acquire 20,000 hectares (twice Paris) of agricultural land in Solano County. And this is what they plan to build there: “A new city with tens of thousands of new homes, a large solar energy farm, orchards with over a million new trees, and over 10,000 acres of new parks and open spaces.” All this, an hour’s drive from San Francisco and Silicon Valley.

This can make you dream, but not everyone is in favor of the project. As reported Numerama, “the region’s political representatives are quite hostile to the proposal, after having been kept out of the project for a long time”. Anyway, local legislation does not yet allow them to build on site…
