The topic is especially important for young voters. The Republican candidate for the US presidential election, Donald Trump, said on Saturday that he is in favor of passing an amendment to the recreational use of marijuana for adults in Florida, the state where he lives.
A constitutional referendum on the issue is planned in Florida in November at the same time as the presidential election. It is common in the United States for voters to vote simultaneously in national elections and on many local issues. The topic is a concern for young Americans, with the majority of those under the age of 50 wanting the legalization of the recreational use of marijuana.
“In Florida, as in many other states that have already approved, the personal amount of marijuana will be authorized for adults,” wrote Donald Trump on his social network. “No one should be criminalized in Florida for what is legal in many other states. We don’t need to lose lives and taxpayers’ money arresting the elderly for having personal doses of marijuana,” he added. However, he called for the adoption of laws against the use of marijuana in public “so that it does not stink everywhere, like in many cities controlled by Democrats.”
Not federally regulated
During his victorious 2016 campaign, Donald Trump took a long-term stand on the issue, saying repeatedly that he would let local authorities handle the issue. Once he entered the White House, he was more knowledgeable on the issue, and gave his support to the tough positions of the Secretary of Justice Jeff Sessions in terms of maintaining order.
In 2018, he repealed the tolerance policy of the administration of the Democratic administration of Barack Obama regarding the legalization of marijuana for recreational use, giving prosecutors full latitude to pursue holders as easily as they want. But most have refused to do so.
Although three-quarters of Americans live in a state where cannabis is legal, it has yet to be legalized federally. Outgoing Democratic President Joe Biden’s Justice Department formally released its recommendation in June to reclassify it as a less dangerous drug than it currently is.
