Universal Fan Fest Nights Decorations Appear at Universal Studios Hollywood

by Sofia Alvarez

Universal Studios Hollywood is currently transforming its landscape to accommodate a massive influx of fandom, as the park prepares for Universal Fan Fest Nights. The after-hours event, which blends high-production spectacle with interactive walkthroughs, is scheduled to run on select nights from April 23 through May 16.

From the entrance ticket booths to the depths of the Lower Lot, the park is being draped in blue and purple signage. For those who track the intersection of global pop culture and themed entertainment, this event represents a strategic pivot toward “fandom-first” experiences, moving beyond traditional movie-based rides to embrace the obsessive, community-driven energy of anime, tabletop gaming, and cult classics.

The scale of the preparation is evident in the physical infrastructure appearing across the studio. New banners and light tower decals are guiding guests toward a series of limited-time activations, including a dedicated ONE PIECE zone, a Dungeons & Dragons quest, and a specialized expansion of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Many of these experiences are designed exclusively for the Fan Fest window, meaning they will not be accessible during standard operating hours.

Universal Studios Hollywood has begun installing event signage across the park’s lampposts and light towers.

The Grand Pirate Show and the Thousand Sunny

Perhaps the most visually distinct addition is the arrival of ONE PIECE. The global anime phenomenon is taking over the WaterWorld theater for the “Grand Pirate Show,” a production that promises to leverage the theater’s existing aquatic capabilities for a high-energy performance. To manage the expected crowds, Universal has installed a specialized banner system at the theater that can be quickly deployed to cover the standard WaterWorld signage during the event.

Beyond the show, a dedicated “fan zone” is being constructed in a courtyard near Hollywood & Dine. Currently shielded by construction barriers, the area is being outfitted as a thematic hub where guests can meet characters and purchase themed food and beverages. The attention to detail is already visible, with a model of the Thousand Sunny ship perched atop a courtyard fountain and “wanted posters” serving as a dedicated photo opportunity for visitors.

The courtyard also features a temporary bar flanked by thematic props like crates and barrels, designed to immerse guests in the world of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew. Character decals have been applied to the surrounding windows, signaling a comprehensive atmospheric shift for the area.

Magic and Monsters: The Forbidden Forest Experience

In The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the focus is on the “Forbidden Forest: Search for the Hippogriff.” This walkthrough experience is being integrated into the extended outdoor queue of the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey attraction. Construction walls currently restrict access to the space, but the presence of stage lighting and black scrims indicates that the experience is designed for nocturnal immersion.

Guests will be tasked with casting spells using their wands to navigate a forest filled with magical creatures. While the final layout remains behind tarps, concept art and official teasers have highlighted the inclusion of Cornish Pixies, twisted vines, and giant spiders. This activation transforms a standard queue area into a narrative-driven encounter, emphasizing the “interactive” nature of the Fan Fest Nights.

Expanding the Map: D&D and Scooby-Doo

The Lower Lot is seeing a similar shift toward interactive storytelling. Near Transformers The Ride – 3D, Universal is hosting “DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: Secrets of Waterdeep.” This walkthrough invites guests to join the Harpers in a mission to save the city of Waterdeep from the beholder known as Xanathar. To manage the flow of participants, a dedicated wait-time banner has been installed at the main entrance.

the Lower Lot will host “Jurassic World: A Journey Through the Eras,” a walkthrough that has already undergone backstage setup and recent previews. This suggests a broader effort to utilize the park’s existing footprints for temporary, high-concept narratives that don’t require permanent construction.

On the studio backlot, the atmosphere takes a more whimsical, mystery-solving turn with “Mystery on the Backlot.” This event merges the world of Scooby-Doo with the Universal Monsters in an interactive whodunit. Guests will be required to solve a mystery involving a movie shoot gone wrong, blending the park’s cinematic history with a classic detective narrative.

The inclusion of the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon the Miracle: Moon Palace Chapter Deluxe short film at the DreamWorks Theatre further underscores the event’s focus on global anime and manga culture, rounding out a lineup that appeals to a wide spectrum of modern fandom.

As the April 23 start date approaches, the final phase of preparation involves the removal of construction barriers and the calibration of the night-time lighting systems in the Forbidden Forest.
