A lawsuit filed against the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God for a debt related to the lease of the Canal 21 resulted in the blocking of R$ 2.7 million in the institution’s accounts.

In 2013, Universal and Grupo Bandeirantes signed an agreement for the institution led by Bishop Edir Macedo to use the Canal 21 for broadcasting religious programs.

According to information from the magazine WestGrupo Bandeirantes sold to an investment fund, in June 2020, the rights to a portion that the Universal Church would pay off.

At the time, Universal was informed that it should make the payment directly to the investment fund, and not to Grupo Bandeirantes. However, the payment was not made within the stipulated period and the fund filed a lawsuit against the neo-Pentecostal institution to collect the amount.

At the same time, Bandeirantes already collected a debt of BRL 12 million, in amounts updated in April 2022, which had been running in court since last year. The company won and Universal was ordered to settle the amounts.

Now, Judge Vitor Gambassi Pereira, from the 23rd Civil Court of São Paulo, ordered the blocking of R$ 2.7 million. The amount will be used to settle part of this debt, which was transferred to the Distressed Credit Rights Investment Fund.

The other side

The Universal Church appealed the decision to the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), claiming that the payment of the installment directly to the Canal 21since it would not have been notified about the credit assignment by Grupo Bandeirantes.

The entity led by Edir Macedo also argues that, according to current legislation, it would need to have agreed to the operation, which did not happen.
