The Puglia Region has prepared a budget change with which 83 million euros are committed up to 2040 for the establishment of the degree course in medicine at the University of Salento. It was discussed this morning in the Budget Committee at the request for hearings by the councilor Francesco Ventola (FdI): the commissioner for Education, Sebastiano Leo, explained that the decision to be traced back to the need to reduce the gap with the other Italian regions in terms of enrollment number for the Faculty of Medicine. In Puglia – he pointed out – 498 students are enrolled in the three active courses, compared to 1490 enrolled in the seven courses in Emilia Romagna. The commissioner specified that the choice to establish a new course in Lecce was agreed with all the Rectors of the Apulian Universities. In the next session the councilors Pierluigi Lopalco (Sanit) and Raffaele Piemontese (Budget) will also be heard.
