Professor Armando Luches, one of the founders of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lecce, today the “Ennio De Giorgi” Department of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Salento, passed away yesterday morning. Born in a small town in Istria in 1940, he studied Physics at the University of Trieste, where he graduated in 1966. In 1967 he chose to move to Lecce, following Professor Luigi Taffara (recently deceased), stimulated by the idea of contribute to the birth of the new Faculty of Sciences at the Fiorini college. He initially held the position of assistant in general physics, was then appointed professor of radioactivity, then associate professor of atomic physics and, since 1987, full professor of physics of matter. He played a central role in the birth – in the 1967/68 academic year – and in the development of the then Institute of Physics of the University; He was then Director of the Department of Physics from 1977 to 1980 and from 1992 to 1997. For many years he worked for the University and for the Lecce section of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics, also as a qualified expert for protection from ionizing radiation. and as security officer until retirement in 2010.
The carreer
He founded a research laboratory and coordinated a working group, still active at an international level, engaged in the synthesis of innovative materials using high-power lasers. He has published more than 300 papers in scientific journals, establishing many national and international collaborations. was elected member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. For his scientific merits he won the “Dionvz Ilkovic” medal, awarded to him by the Slovak Academy of Sciences, while the Czech Academy of Sciences awarded him the medal of honor “Ernst Mach”. The relationship with many of his students was active until the end of his life. Many of them supported him in his research activity, and he continued to have intense and stimulating exchanges and strong bonds of friendship even with many of those who, after graduation, took different paths from research, remembers his daughter Paola Luches, close to the which, in Modena, the professor spent the last months after a short illness, The merit of the city of Lecce was that of allowing its contribution to the development and scientific and cultural growth of the city to be adequately enhanced and amplified, concludes Paola Luches , to survive his disappearance and leave a trace for the future. In his long career full of prestigious international awards, Professor Luches has trained generations of physicists, underlines the Rector Fabio Pollice, who remember him not only for the indisputable scientific authority of his teachings but also for the qualities of humanity, simplicity, grace and elegance. His classical training also allowed him to range even in the humanities. This breadth of cultural horizons, humanity and professionalism have been its distinctive traits and its most precious heritage.
