Professor Armando Luches, one of the founders of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lecce, today the “Ennio De Giorgi” Department of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Salento, passed away yesterday morning. Born in a small town in Istria in 1940, he studied Physics at the University of Trieste, where he graduated in 1966. He initially held the position of assistant in general physics, was then appointed professor of radioactivity, then associate professor of atomic physics and, since 1987, full professor of physics of matter. He founded a research laboratory and coordinated a working group, still active at an international level, engaged in the synthesis of innovative materials using high-power lasers. He has published more than 300 papers in scientific journals, establishing many national and international collaborations. was elected member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. For his scientific merits he won the “Dionvz Ilkovic” medal, awarded to him by the Slovak Academy of Sciences, while the Czech Academy of Sciences awarded him the medal of honor “Ernst Mach”. The relationship with many of his students was active until the end of his life.
