The Kannur University Syndicate has decided to approach the High Court against Governor Arif Muhammad Khan’s decision to freeze the appointment of Kannur University Malayalam Department Associate Professor Priya Varghese. The decision of the emergency syndicate meeting held yesterday is that the Governor, who has frozen the appointment using the Chancellor’s authority, should not yield. The university will approach the High Court today against the order. Vice Chancellor Gopinath Ravindran had received legal advice that the Governor’s order was not legally binding.

The governor issued the order without giving a show-cause notice to the vice-chancellor. The legal advice is that this is not legal. Accordingly, the Syndicate meeting decided to approach the High Court. Using the Chancellor’s authority, the governor has frozen the process of giving first rank to Kannur University’s Malayalam department associate professor rank list to Priya Varghese, wife of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s private secretary KK Ragesh. The governor’s action rejected the VC’s explanation that there was no irregularity in giving first rank to Priya Varghese based on the interview marks. The governor had also ordered to send a show cause notice to all those concerned with the appointment process, including the vice-chancellor, members of the interview board and the syndicate.
