University students protest for a second day near parliament in Sri Lanka against the government. Police fired tear gas to disperse them. In this situation, due to the nationwide trade union strike, the traffic was severely affected and the normal life of the people was paralyzed.

Amid the severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka, protests are taking place across the country demanding the resignation of President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

University students went on Thursday to stress the demand and to besiege parliament. They were detained by police and fired tear gas.

Following that, police fired tear gas at students who tried to storm the parliament for a second day on Friday. Thus, a tense situation prevailed.

As a result, unions across the country went on a one-day strike. As a result, shops, offices and schools were closed. Employees in factories, banks and government offices went on strike outside the offices.

Accepting the call of the unions, a black flag was erected in the shops. Various protesters also wore black T-shirts. Traffic was completely paralyzed as transport and railway workers also went on strike. Thus, the people suffered greatly.

In this situation, the parliamentary session was adjourned till the 17th. However, the Speaker did not make any announcement regarding the no-confidence motion filed last Wednesday. Thus the amalgamation occurred.

Due to this, the main opposition SJP besieged the Speaker’s office and demanded a decision on the no – confidence motion. MPs have warned that they will bring people into parliament and stage a protest if they do not announce a date to debate the resolution.

Adibah Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has announced that a state of emergency will be declared in Sri Lanka from midnight yesterday as the protests intensify. A statement from Adibah’s office said, “The state of emergency has been declared to ensure public safety and ensure that essential services are available to the people without any harm. It is noteworthy that Sri Lanka has already declared a state of emergency on April 1.
