A policeman discovered the cultural value on the beach in St. St. Constantine and Helena, the Ministry of Interior and archaeologists are investigating how ended up there

Who brought a sarcophagus from the Roman era to the beach of St. st konstantin and Elena? Police officers, archaeologists and specialists in Varna are looking for an answer to this question. The find was discovered on Wednesday by a former police officer.
The sarcophagus was probably being prepared for a table, “24 Hours” learned.

“It is painted with facade paint, it looks like latex, we are currently cleaning it. I cannot say for sure when it was laid,” said the restorer at the Regional History Museum, Milen Marinov.

According to him, the process will take time, and technical expertise will be carried out.

Restorers are cleaning its exterior walls to unravel the mystery. What they find under it would solve the mystery somewhat.

Someone took this sarcophagus to the beach in a special transport,

but who and why – at the moment it is not clear. There are no cameras in the area to make it clear how such a valuable and heavy find ended up on the beach.

According to the opinion of experts, upon initial inspection, the cultural value is from the Roman era, with rich relief decoration, probably from the II-III century AD, with approximate dimensions of 90 x 235 x 75 cm.

Its four sides are decorated with characteristic relief stylized ornaments – garlands with hanging bunches, animal heads, rosettes, labris (double-edged axe), etc.

When the sarcophagus was discovered, it had a solid marble lid with three niches. According to those in the know, this is a sure sign that the antique was prepared to decorate someone’s rich home in the complex.

To fit the lid, the sarcophagus was even cut with flex, experts suspect. It is possible that there were also remains in it and that they were thrown away.

The lid is modern and is kept in the Regional History Museum, its director Igor Lazarenko told “24 Chasa”. He thinks the paint is new. The find is not typical for the northern part of the country, rather the decoration testifies that it is from Western Bulgaria.

“But everything will become clear when he is removed
the facade paint”,

added Lazarenko. According to him, there are many sarcophagi from that era in the museum, but this one is completely different and has nothing to do with them. Decorations with bull heads and garlands are not characteristic of the Varna region.

“We will keep it as material evidence in the pre-trial proceedings. If it is taken away in favor of the state, we will contact the Ministry of Finance, what is the procedure for it to be provided to us,” added Lazarenko.
