Unknown model numbers: Apple is testing four new M4 Macs for launch in October – with up to 32 GB of RAM | report

Apple won’t reveal any new Macs at the September iPhone event – they aren’t due to appear until next October. It is still unclear whether Apple is planning an event for the new Mac models. According to several reports, Apple is planning to introduce new MacBook Pro models including the M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max as well as a new Mac mini. According to the rumor mill, this will have a new, significantly smaller case.

Bloomberg reported Now that new, previously unknown model numbers have appeared in log files from third-party manufacturers, which Apple is currently testing internally: “16.1”, “16.2”, “16.3” and “16.10”. The model number “16.3” is already known from the description files in macOS Sequoia – but “16.1”, “16.2” and “16.10” are not yet found here.

CPU- und GPU-core
Three of these Mac models come with ten CPU and GPU cores – and one with eight CPU and GPU cores. Apple currently does not offer an M chip with 10 cores, so it is possible that the company will offer two configurations of the M4 without an additional name, as is the case with the current M3 Pro and M3 Max.

All tested models with 16 or 32 GB RAM
M3 currently supports up to 24 GB of RAM without suffix – and if the models mentioned above are actually M4 without suffix, you can assume that it also supports 32 GB of RAM. In all likelihood, Apple will leave the basic RAM configuration of these models at 8 GB, because the additional costs for RAM and SSD are too high for the company.

Mac mini? MacBook Pro?
It is not yet known which devices these model numbers refer to. What is strange is that Apple currently offers only one MacBook Pro with the M3 without the suffix to the name – but it is clear that all the models mentioned above have the M4 without the suffix to the name. The numbers do not match the Mac mini either, because even if the eight-core and ten-core differences in different model numbers, it is unclear what the remaining two numbers are.
