Wn the case of an unknown, dark substance in the dunes of Baltrum, special forces from the fire brigade have moved to the East Frisian island. Even after investigations by the dangerous goods specialists, it was still unclear what kind of substance it was, said the municipal fire chief of the Baltrumer fire department Alexander Gutbier-Wach on Friday. So it could be some kind of bitumen. However, there is no danger to the population. A sample of the substance was taken to a laboratory on the mainland. The first results are expected early next week.

Walkers made an unusual find

On Thursday, a walker discovered the substance far in the east of the islands in the dunes off the path a few centimeters on the ground and informed the fire brigade and the regulatory office. Baltrum is the smallest of the seven inhabited East Frisian Islands and has around 500 inhabitants.

Baltrumer firefighters first tried to catch the tough black mass in a bag with spades. After three quarters of an hour, the emergency services had uncovered an area of ​​about three square meters in which the solid and partly viscous substance was located.

The island defense then alerted the district fire chief of the district of Aurich, who came to the island on Friday with specialists from the dangerous goods train from the Sandhorst fire department and the ABC train from the Osterhusen fire department, including measurement technology. They examined the fabric and brought the sample to the mainland.
