Mexico City innovates by implementing the early voting for people in preventive detention and in a state of prostrationfrom May 6th.

This measure, unprecedented in the city, is carried out within the framework of the Ordinary Local Electoral Process 2023-2024with the collaboration of the Electoral Institute of Mexico City (IECM) and the National Electoral Institute (INE).

It is estimated that more than 1,862 people in preventive detention will have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote from the seven prison centers in the city.

To guarantee the integrity of the process, around 30 IECM officials will supervise election day at these facilities.

In addition, approximately 500 people in a state of prostration will be able to participate in the process from the comfort of their homes.

Those who have previously registered with the INE will receive assistance during the casting of their vote, thus ensuring their participation in the elections for the Head of Government, mayors and deputies.

For both groups, envelopes will be provided with the corresponding ballots, along with information material about the electoral process and the candidates’ political platforms.

Once the vote has been cast, the envelopes will be transferred to the INE District Boards for safekeeping and subsequent counting during the elections on June 2.

This unprecedented initiative in CDMX reflects the commitment of local and national electoral authorities to the inclusion and democratic participation of all sectors of the population in the electoral process.

It is a significant step towards the democratization of the electoral system, allowing voices that have historically been marginalized to be heard and taken into account in decision-making about the future of the city.

Today, the president advisor of the IECM and other officials of the institute have accompanied the early voting process at the Women’s Social Reintegration Center, while Councilor Mauricio Huesca Rodríguez has supervised the vote in a state of prostration at the Benito Mayor’s Office Juarez.
