Title: Unusually High Mosquito Activity in South Jordan Causes Concern Among Residents

Subtitle: Recent weather conditions create a perfect storm for mosquito breeding in the area

South Jordan, Utah – The South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement District is facing a surge in mosquito activity this year, with technicians reporting finding approximately ten times the expected number of mosquitoes for this time of year. Residents are experiencing an increase in mosquito bites and are expressing concern over the sudden rise in mosquito population in areas they haven’t encountered them before.

Britton Cochran, a resident of the Daybreak community, recalls being repeatedly bitten by mosquitoes this year. “I have to take bug spray pretty much wherever I go,” Cochran remarked while standing by a lake on Independence Day.

Dan McBride, the assistant director of the South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement District, emphasized the urgency of the situation. “I can’t justify not working on the Fourth of July right now,” he said. McBride explained that they are receiving numerous calls from the public, requesting an explanation for the unprecedented mosquito presence.

According to McBride, this surge in mosquitoes can be attributed to a combination of factors, creating the “perfect storm.” He cited a robust winter with significant snowpack, followed by cool daytime temperatures during spring, evening showers, and a subsequent warm-up. These conditions have created ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Despite the alarming increase in mosquito activity, none of the mosquitoes in McBride’s district have tested positive for the West Nile Virus so far this year. Nonetheless, he advises residents to take precautions, including wearing long sleeves or applying repellent to prevent mosquito bites. Additionally, he emphasizes the importance of eliminating stagnant water sources, such as upturned Frisbees or any container that may collect even a small amount of water, as these can serve as breeding sites for mosquitoes.

As mosquito season continues, residents of South Jordan are urged to remain vigilant and take appropriate measures to protect themselves from these disease-carrying pests. The South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement District is working tirelessly to combat the surge in mosquito activity, ensuring the safety and comfort of the community.
