An unpublished novel by Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez will be published in the spring of 2024, ten years after his death, Penguin Random House reported.

However, Gabo —as the author is known— would have prioritized the writing of his autobiography, Live to tell it, published in 2002, two years before his last work of fiction, Memories of my sad whores, inspired by La casa de las bellas sleepers, by Japanese Yasunari Kawabata, also winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
“See you in August was the result of a last effort to continue creating against all odds,” said the writer’s sons, Rodrigo and Gonzalo García Barcha. “Reading it once again, almost ten years after his death, we discovered that the text had many and very enjoyable merits,” they added.
According to the children of the author of El coronel no tiene que le escriba, the novel contains “the most outstanding aspects of Gabo’s work: his capacity for invention, the poetry of language, the captivating narrative, his understanding of the human being and his affection for his experiences and misadventures, especially in love, possibly the main theme of all his work».
Gabriel García Márquez received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982 and, according to the Instituto Cervantes, he is the most translated Spanish-language writer of the 21st century.
Now, the publication of a new title, just the year in which a decade of his death is commemorated, is considered in advance as the editorial event that will mark 2024, and another evidence of the immortality of Gabo’s work, not only due to the surprise of the unpublished title, but because of the attachment of millions of readers to his well-known novels that have earned him everlasting and worldwide recognition.
The editorial director of Penguin Random House, Pilar Reyes, has said that as editors of all the works of Gabriel García Márquez, “the publication of an unpublished work of his is an immense source of pride, as well as news that readers around the world will celebrate. It is also an honor to publish it in 2024, the year in which the ten years of his death are commemorated ».
The label also announced that the work will be published simultaneously in physical, electronic book and audio book, and in the main languages of the world.
