Amidst ongoing mourning after the New Year shooting in Manipur’s Imphal valley that left four people dead, the Meitei extremist group paraded through the city in broad daylight, sparking outrage and renewed tension in the region. The video of the parade, in which the group can be seen with rocket launchers in an open vehicle, has been widely circulated on social media.

The shooting on New Year’s Day in the Imphal Valley resulted in four deaths and 14 injuries, as gunmen of militant Meitei outfits in police uniform opened fire on the crowd with machine guns in the Lilong, Meitei Muslim area of Thoubal. This attack on the Pangals, who were not involved in the riots, marks the first overt attack on the group who were previously on good terms with the Kuki-Meitei sect involved in the rebellion.

The ongoing ethnic riots in the region have already claimed the lives of more than 200 people and left over half a million people homeless since they began on May 3rd of last year. These recent developments have further challenged the maintenance of law and order in the state, leading to an indefinite curfew being imposed in the Imphal Valley.

The unsettling parade and continued unrest in the region highlight the volatile situation in Manipur and the urgent need for peace and stability.
