    Watan Today: The Director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) for the Jordan region, Olaf Becker, expressed his appreciation and thanks to the Jordanian government for its continued support for the agency, and its recent exemption to UNRWA from the cost of school books for the years 2019-2023, amounting to 4 million Jordanian dinars.
    This came during a meeting between the Director General of the Department of Palestinian Affairs, Engineer Rafiq Khirfan, and his counterpart Baker, during which a number of topics and issues related to UNRWA’s work in the Kingdom were discussed.
    In its session held on Wednesday, headed by Prime Minister Bishr Al-Khasawneh, the Council of Ministers decided to exempt the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) from the costs of school textbooks for the years (2019-2023) worth more than four million dinars. The Council of Ministers, In response to the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II, he decided last October to allocate 3 million dinars to support UNRWA’s budget.
    According to the department’s statement on Thursday, the two sides discussed the general situation of UNRWA in light of the suspension of 16 of its donor countries, following the accusations leveled against 12 employees for their involvement in the events of October 7.
    The two sides stressed the important role played by UNRWA, especially in Gaza, and that this suspension will hinder the provision of basic humanitarian aid that they desperately need.
    Sherifan appreciated the efforts UNRWA is making in providing services to Palestinian refugees despite all the challenges it faces.
