Beijing: China has rejected criticism that it is opposed to India’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council and against reforms. China has said it emphasizes the need for the widest possible consensus to find a complete solution through serious and in-depth discussions. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has said that the world hopes the United Nations will play a leading role effectively in dealing with global challenges. China, along with the voices of developing countries, supports continued progress in the right direction of UNSC reform.
Wang Yi said this during a meeting with Tarek MAM Albany and Alexander Marschik, co-chairs of the intergovernmental negotiations on UNSC reform of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly. Wang’s comments come a week after India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar suggested that the short-sighted approach of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council was hindering reforms in the global body. Pointing towards China, he said that the biggest opponent of reform in the UNSC was not any Western country. After this attack by Jaishankar on China, now this reaction has come from its side.

We are not against reforms: China

Wang said China supports the continued progress of UNSC reform in the right direction, according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Asked about criticism that Beijing is blocking reform in the UN’s top body. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said the reform of the UNSC is an integral part of the overall reform of the United Nations. For this, maintaining the unity and cooperation of the international community should be a priority. Member States need to build the widest possible consensus on solutions through serious and intensive consultation. He said reforms should benefit all member states rather than serve the interests of a few. However, he did not give a direct answer on whether China was specifically blocking India’s entry into the UNSC as a permanent member.

India has been at the forefront of efforts in the United Nations for long overdue urgent reform of the Security Council. India is insisting that it is rightfully entitled to a place on the high table of the United Nations as a permanent member. Apart from India, countries like Brazil, South Africa, Germany and Japan are demanding to increase the number of permanent members in the Security Council to reflect the contemporary global reality. The five permanent members of UNSC are Russia, Britain, China, France and America. They can veto any concrete resolution in the UN Security Council, the world body’s top organ.
