Attingal: Concerns have been raised over the unscientific nature of the karate competition in the school sports fair in Kerala. The competition, which is organized as part of the State School Sports Mela, differs significantly from the National School Sports Mela, causing challenges for young athletes practicing karate.

V. Sampath, a National A grade judge and certified trainer, highlighted the disparities, stating that the current format makes it difficult for many children who are dedicated to the sport of karate.

While the National School Sports Festival includes 68 events across three age groups (U-19, U-17, and U-14), the competition in Kerala is limited to only 24 events under the U-19 category. This means that children who wish to compete at the national level must first compete in the U-19 category in Kerala, even if they fall into the U-14 or U-17 age groups.

This discrepancy creates tough competition for young athletes in Kerala, with many talented players missing out on the opportunity to participate in the national competition. Additionally, children who register in the senior category of karate are unable to compete in other school sports, further limiting their opportunities for participation and advancement.

In response to these challenges, school sports talents are calling for immediate intervention to address the unscientific situation surrounding the state school sports fair. The aim is to create a fair and equitable competition environment for young athletes across all age categories.

The demand for a comprehensive solution to the issue is gaining traction, as stakeholders seek to ensure that all young athletes in Kerala have the opportunity to showcase their skills and compete at the national level without facing unnecessary obstacles.
