In Friday’s stage, the cycling elite had to tackle two HC-category climbs throughout the day, before finishing with a first-category climb.
Halfway up the final climb, it was Visma rider Matteo Jorgenson who held a solitary lead, with a number of star climbers chasing behind.
Overall leader Tadej Pogacar was in a group with rivals Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel a couple of minutes behind the Visma rider. With just over eight km left in the stage, the Slovenian saw an opportunity to break away from the Dane and the Belgian.
– He is delivering a fantastic high level, which he has done throughout the Tour, said Discovery expert Henrik Evensen as the Slovenian broke away from his rivals with about eight km left in the stage.
The Slovenian 25-year-old swallowed seconds on the competitors up the final climb and caught one breakaway rider after another.
– It is simply hopeless. He is above all others, exclaimed Discovery commentator Theis Magelssen as Pogacar was closing in on Jorgenson at the front.
With two km to go, he also broke away from the Visma rider and rode in for his fourth stage victory in this year’s Tour de France – in a dominant manner.
Evenepoel secured fifth place ahead of Vingegaard in sixth. The two climbing stars crossed the finish line 1 minute and 42 seconds behind Pogacar. Thus, the Slovenian UAE rider leads by over five minutes over the Dane before Saturday’s stage.
The overall competition before the last two stages:
2. Jonas Vingegaard, 5:03 behind
3. Remco Evenepoel, 7:01 behind
