Updated as of August 8, 2024, 11:07 AM
The south-central region of Chile is experiencing the effects of a new frontal system that has brought strong winds and heavy rainfall. This system has caused widespread damage, with fallen trees and power outages reported.
The strong winds, exceeding 100 km/h, have caused significant damage and forced Santiago Airport to suspend flights. The Metropolitan Region is particularly affected by the storm, with reports of fallen trees and power outages.
The weather forecast predicts that the first part of the frontal system will bring strong winds, followed by heavy rainfall in the central area. While the wind will eventually subside, with gusts up to 36 km/h expected, further rain is forecast throughout the day.
More than 20 millimeters of rain have already fallen in the Metropolitan Region, with an additional 10 to 15 millimeters expected. The heaviest rainfall is expected to subside by early Saturday morning.
The storm is expected to return to the capital next week, with possible rain on Monday and Tuesday.
