Unveiling busts of Diogenes and Socrates Fanourakis

The unveiling of the bust of Captain Diogenes Fanourakis, hero of the Second World War, took place in Halki on Sunday, October 29 after the Liturgy, on the island he was born and defended until his death in 1944.

Captain Diogenes Fanourakis served in the ranks of the Greek Army and participated in important operations during World War II. He sacrificed his life for the freedom of the country and the preservation of Greek values.

The life and work of Diogenes were presented with speeches by the President of the Union of Discharged Officers of Rhodes, Mr. Minas Papadakis, and the Mayor of Chalkis, Evangelos Fragakis.

The President of the Union of Retired Officers of Rhodes donated to the High School L.T. “Socrates Fanourakis” of Chalkis, the Greek flag, which was received by the director Mrs Vadiaka.

The unveiling was made by the vice-president of the ILF, Mr. Evangelos Iliadis, in the presence of the Mayor, Mr. Evangelos Fragakis, the representative of the Dodecanese Police Director, vice-mayors and members of the Municipal Council, members of the Union of Expatriated Officers of Rhodes, the Commanders of the Police Station of the port station and the military outpost of Halkis, the Principal of the LT Halkis Gymnasium, teachers, students and the crowd.

Lunch followed, offered by I.L.F. to the Apostrata Union.

The bust was sculpted by the well-known Dodecanese sculptor Mr. Konstantinos Neophytou, who also sculpted the bust that is in the War Museum of Athens and will now be a permanent point of reference for Halki as a symbol of valor and devotion to the homeland.

The Board of Directors of the Lohagos Fanourakis Foundation expresses its gratitude to all those who contributed to the implementation of this important project, and especially to Mr. Emmanuel Farkonas who offered technical support throughout the process.

The bust of Captain Diogenes Fanourakis is an important event for the preservation of Greek history and the recognition of the heroic deeds of the people who sacrificed their lives for the country.

On Saturday, October 28, after the student parade, an event was held at the LT Chalkis “Socrates Fanourakis” High School in honor of the Founder of the Foundation Captain Fanourakis and the unveiling of his bust, which now adorns the island’s school.

The life and work of Socrates were presented with speeches and related videos by the President of the ILF, Mr. Kosmas Sfiriou, the Mayor of Chalkis, Evangelos Fragakis, and the vice-president of the ILF, Mr. Evangelos Iliadis.

At the event, the former scholarship holder of the I.L.F. Mr. Christos Giannoutsos, presented the plan of distance learning foreign languages ​​(which will start immediately in consultation with the teachers), for the students of the school of Chalkis, as a reward for the scholarship he received from the Foundation.

The unveiling of the bust of Socrates was done by the President of the ILF, Mr. Kosmas Sfiriou, in the presence of the Mayor, Mr. Evangelos Fragakis, the vice-mayors and members of the Municipal Council, the commanders of the Police station, the port station and the military outpost of Chalkis, the director of LT Halkis High School, the teachers, parents and students of the school.

This was followed by a reception for those present, offered by the I.L.F.

The bust was crafted by the well-known Dodecanese sculptor Mr. Konstantinos Neophytou and will serve as a reminder to future generations of the importance of a virtuous life and charity, two elements that are inextricably linked to the life and legacy of S. Fanourakis.
