The little birds have been chirping about it for a while. On May 7, Apple finally let the cat out of the bag and announced two new iPads. In addition to the popular iPad Air, the iPad Pro is also getting a new version. Both devices feature some external and internal changes.
For both devices, the front camera now moves to the “middle” bar in landscape mode. Additionally, the iPad Pro now features the M4 chip. More on that in a moment. The iPad Pro will be available in two different colors: Silver and Space Gray. It comes in four storage sizes: 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB.
What Can the New iPad Pro Do?
Apple has introduced the new M4 chip in the iPad Pro. Although Apple does not disclose exact clock rates, they are expected to have been increased. A new reduced version is available in the models with 256 or 512 GB of storage, which only have three performance cores. The number of graphics cores remains at 10, but the improved architecture allows for ray tracing on an iPad for the first time. The RAM is now consistently 16 GB, previously it was 8 or 16 GB depending on the model.
The iPad Pro continues to be available in the 11-inch size and is complemented by a new 13-inch model, which replaces the previous 12.9-inch model. The case is now considerably thinner: The 11-inch model measures 5.3 mm instead of 5.9 mm, while the 13-inch model measures 5.1 mm instead of 6.4 mm. Both models are now available in Silver or Space Black. The 11-inch model weighs less than 450 grams, and the 13-inch model is almost 110 grams lighter than its predecessor.
The new display technology brings important innovations. The “Ultra Retina XDR Display” combines two tandem OLED panels into a screen where each pixel lights up individually. This allows for deeper blacks and higher contrasts. The resolution of the 11-inch model increases from 2388 x 1668 to 2420 x 1668 pixels, while the larger model now has 2752 x 2064 instead of 2732 x 2048 pixels. The variable refresh rate of up to 120 Hertz (ProMotion) and the extended color gamut DCI-P3 remain. The new OLEDs achieve up to 1,000 nits brightness and up to 1,600 nits for HDR content. A new optional anti-reflective nano-texture is available only for the models with 1 or 2 TB of storage and costs an additional €130.
The battery capacity of the larger iPad Pro has been reduced from 40.88 to 38.99 watt-hours due to the thinner case, while the 11-inch model’s capacity slightly increased from 28.65 to 31.29 watt-hours. The ultra-wide-angle camera has been removed, while the main camera continues to offer 12 megapixels. The front camera is now placed on the long side of the screen, making it better for landscape video chats.
Wi-Fi 6E with support for the 6 GHz band is still included, along with USB-C, Thunderbolt 3, Face ID, and GPS in the 5G model. The SIM card slot has been removed, so only an eSIM is available.
