Lucknow: More than 6,000 loudspeakers removed from places of worship in Uttar Pradesh in 72 hours.

A review meeting on law and order in Uttar Pradesh was held last week in the capital Lucknow under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Adityanath. In it, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered the authorities to remove loudspeakers placed without prior permission in places of worship and to limit the volume of sound in permitted loudspeakers to the permissible decibel level.

The state interior ministry has subsequently asked temple, mosque, gurudwaras, churches and wedding hall administrators across the state to abide by the legal provisions for loudspeakers. It also directed all police stations to file a report by April 30 on the action taken on the orders of the Chief Minister.

Authorities and police began acting on the order last Monday.

State Police Additional Director (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said yesterday, “As per the government order, 6,031 loudspeakers have been removed across the state in the last 72 hours. The volume of 29,674 loudspeakers is limited to the allowable decibel level. Action has been taken in all places of worship without any discrimination. ”

The Supreme Court banned the use of loudspeakers in public places from 10 pm to 6 am in June 2005, citing the serious impact of noise pollution on public health. The only exception is for emergencies. This was pointed out by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at his review meeting last week.
