Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperative Adviser AF Hasan Arif said that the chairmen of the Union Parishads are not being removed now. He said that steps will be taken later as required.

He said these things to reporters in his office at the Secretariat on Monday (August 19).

When asked whether there is any decision to remove the chairmen of the Union Parishad, the adviser said, “I am not giving my hands to the Union Parishad now.” Let’s check and see how the activities are, if any action is required later on or if the need arises, it will be taken. And in the beginning, local government employees are being given the responsibility to ensure that the daily registration of births and deaths, and other activities that have to be done on a daily basis, and that the development activities at the village level continue.

He said that the mayors of the city corporation have been removed and administrators have been appointed there. Administrators have also been appointed in municipalities, upazilas and district councils.

He also said that this government is not a routine government. This government has come as a result of the movement of people from every part of the country through a revolution, the students, the army, and all. We are their representatives. We are acting as representatives of the students who have entrusted us with their demands.

Stating that no decision has been made regarding the councilors of the city corporation, he said, if there is an administrator, whether the councilors will perform their duties or not, that is up to them now. The principle is that the administrator will serve in place of the mayor-chairman.

When asked why they were removed, the advisor said, they are representatives after the parliament. They represent up to the village level. It is a series of manifestations of the reasons why the students and the people have been protesting. Being present is not a big factor. Two or four people are present. He also said that these removals are a reflection of the movement’s expectations.

He also said, we will go consistently. It is not a matter of cut and cut. This is an attempt to clean up the entire local government. That is what everyone expects. The movement was against the system. That system is run through the local government up to the village. How long administrators will serve depends on the situation.
