Syed Sana, Lucknow: In Uttar Pradesh, the complete dependence on the Meteorological Department (IMD) for heat wave information is going to end. Till now the government was completely dependent on IMD for heat wave alert. However, now the state will not be dependent on the India Meteorological Department for heat wave warning. Uttar Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (UPSDMA) can now issue warning at its own level. Accordingly, the administration will be able to prepare for rescue. In the city, yellow alert of heat wave will be considered at 39.94 degrees Celsius, orange at 42.55 degrees Celsius and red alert at 44.65 degrees Celsius.

UPSDMA i.e. Uttar Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority has fixed the heat threshold for 75 districts across the state. Uttar Pradesh has become the first state in the country to do so. In fact, recently the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) had asked all the states to fix the heat threshold to protect against heat wave. On this basis, without waiting for the heat wave warning to be issued by the IMD, the states will be able to issue alerts based on the situation at their own level.

such standards were made

UP SDMA Advisor and Associate Professor of PPN PG College Kanpur, Dr. Kashif Imdad said that the study is based on the standards of IMD, World Health Organization and World Meteorological Organization. The basis for heat wave warning in the state is decided on the basis of 40 degrees or 4.5 degrees increase from the normal temperature.

This is how the study was done

The UP SDMN studied the daily maximum temperatures in March, April, May and June between 1982 and 2003. The Uttar Pradesh Disaster Management Authority consultants and researchers from the University of Manchester have prepared a report based on the study and determined the threshold for three levels of heat wave alert.

Boundary by districts

The geographical conditions of different districts of the state are different. The normal temperature of the northern districts is lower than that of the southern region. In such a situation, people of the northern districts get affected by even a slight increase in temperature. In such a situation, different heat thresholds are necessary for different districts. This study determines different limits of heat threshold in 75 districts of the state.

UPSDMA advisor Dr Kashif Imdad along with Dr Bhanu Mal, Dr Mehboob Sahana of Manchester University United Kingdom, Dr Arti Krishnan, Dr Upasak Das played a key role in the study. According to experts, guidelines will be issued to prevent deaths due to heat wave due to temperature setting limit.
