In Mexico there is an urgent need for public policies that can provide better economical quality to its citizens, because if they do not do so, 74% of the population will continue to be born and die poor, warned the Espinosa Yglesias Study Center (CEE).

Mariana Becerra, researcher at the CEYtold this newspaper that they carried out a study of social mobility (the opportunity to improve the economic level) of Mexicans according to the possibilities or the level that their parents had.

He explained that one of the main challenges for the new Government who comes to power, will be to stop the high rate of inequality that holds citizens back.

For the Center, a new National Development Plan that promotes the exit from poverty, where we need to strengthen the health system in Mexico that is very deteriorated and public education to be able to grow, said the specialist.

The seven areas of opportunity, explained Becerra, They were integrated into a document that can be consulted on the Center’s pages and will be delivered as a proposal to the three presidential candidates.

Among several points to improve, it is stated that in our country there is an opportunity for collection in the area of property taxes. “According to OECD figures, Mexico only collected 0.3% of the GDP for this matter in 2022, while countries such as Chile or Colombia collected 1.22% and 1.53%, respectively.

The OECD average is 1.9% of GDP”. One of the areas to attack is the care sector, where a majority percentage of women in Mexico do not have remuneration for being in charge of caring for children, the elderly or the sick within the home, which forces them to They do not go out to work and they are also not remunerated for these activities, a situation that contributes to the lack of social mobility and an environment of poverty.

In the case of domestic workers, who represent 1 in 10 women in the female workforce, they make up the lowest occupational stratum of the national economy, 98% of them lack social security and 72.1% only receive up to one salary. minimum.

On the other hand, researcher Mariana Becerra added that only 3% of Mexicans who are born into a low-income family manage to raise their level when they grow up.

“There are many Mexicans living in our country and what we are asking the candidates is to focus on this issue to lift the population out of poverty.”

He insisted that the new Government will have to seek to increase public spending on education and health, increase the percentages as part of the GDP and only then can change occur.

He stated that another of the main economic challenges that exist for the authorities is to combat the level of informality that has exceeded levels of 50%, where more than half of the businesses and companies do not operate in compliance with costs and this illegality contributes to the inequality and discrimination.

He indicated that it is necessary to stop the employment discrimination that exists in Mexico in 2024, being one of the few countries that still requires photography in the curriculum, which makes people hire based on their skin tone, the way they look, and opens a disparity gap.

Indicators indicate that 30% of Mexicans lack a financial instrument, which makes inequality even greater at a time when digital banking services are growing.

These topics, Becerra insisted, were addressed by different specialists and can be consulted on the website and networks of the Espinosa Yglesias Study Center (CEEY).
