The bluetongue virus, specifically serotype 3, has recently been identified in the Netherlands, marking the first time this particular serotype has been detected in the country. Unfortunately, there is currently no established vaccine available to combat this specific serotype. Vaccinations for other serotypes do not provide protection against serotype 3.

In light of this development, the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and the NVWA are expected to provide more information regarding the spread of the virus, export restrictions, and guidelines. Until then, it is advisable to exercise caution when transporting live animals and living products, ensure that stables are equipped with insect-resistant mesh, and remain vigilant for any abnormal behavior or clinical symptoms in sheep and other ruminants.

The bluetongue virus has already been detected on four sheep farms in the Netherlands, marking the first cases of bluetongue since 2009. The presence of the virus now implies that the Netherlands will lose its EU-free status, which had been maintained since 2012. While the bluetongue virus usually causes mild symptoms in cattle, it is still important to take preventive measures to avoid infection.

Further information about symptoms and what actions to take if the virus is suspected can be found at GD Animal Health. Additionally, LTO is a source for more updates and news about the bluetongue virus in the Netherlands.]
