Baek Woong-ki (63), head coach of the Indian archery team, who arrived in Paris, France a few days before the opening of the Paris Olympics, received an absurd notice from the Archery Association of India (AAI) telling him to “pack and return home.”

According to local Indian media outlets such as The Indian Express and The Hindu on the 22nd (local time), Director Baek Woong-ki experienced this while waiting for the issuance of the ‘AD (Accreditation) card’, an ID card for entry into the Olympic stadium and athlete village, in Paris.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) informed Coach Baek that he was no longer needed as the head coach of the archery team and that he had not requested an AD card, and that he should collect his flight ticket back to India that he had booked for the afternoon of the 20th.

Coach Baek, who recently arrived in Paris after training in Marseille, was furious, saying, “I was excluded from my role as Olympic coach at such a crucial time,” and that it was “humiliating and insulting.”

He continued, “Foreign coaches were excluded due to the IOA’s poor and reckless administration,” and “When our contracts expire on the 30th of next month, we will not extend them even if they ask us to.”

He received a return ticket from AAI executives on the 20th and returned to India, after which he looked for a flight to Korea.

In this regard, local media outlets have drawn attention to the fact that AAI added a physiotherapist to the Indian national team just a day after coach Baek was excluded.

The association distributes AD cards to players, coaches, medical staff, administrative staff, etc., which are provided in a certain number to each country. The Indian archery team was issued four AD cards for coaches and support staff, but the absurd result was that Coach Baek was not allowed to remain in Paris because he was placed fifth instead of first.

It was reported that the physical therapist was able to join the national team instead of coach Baek thanks to his close relationship with the association’s secretary general.

Meanwhile, Coach Baek served as coach of the women’s team at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics, where he won four gold medals and one silver medal.

Afterwards, he agreed to an offer from India to become the head coach of the Indian archery team for the 2024 Paris Olympics, and was to serve as the head coach of the Indian national team of 20 men and women for two years from 2022 until the end of August 2024, after the Paris Olympics.
