Lebanon and Hanover Tennis Teams Dominate New Hampshire Coaches Association Awards

A wave of recognition swept through the Lebanon and Hanover tennis programs this month as the New Hampshire Tennis Coaches Association announced its annual award recipients and All-State Team selections. The accolades highlight a season of exceptional performance, sportsmanship, and coaching across multiple divisions.

Hanover Girls Shine in Division I

The Hanover High School girls’ tennis team was lauded for its exemplary conduct, earning the team sportsmanship award in Division I. Individual honors also followed, with Sophia Costa securing a position on the All-State 1st Team, and her teammate Julia Lawe recognized on the All-State 2nd Team. Despite a strong showing, the Bears’ season concluded in the NHIAA D-I tournament semifinals with a loss to Bedford.

Lebanon Boys Recognized for Sportsmanship in Division II

In Division II competition, the Lebanon High School boys’ tennis team also received the team sportsmanship award, demonstrating a commitment to fair play and respect on the court. Kyle Hines further contributed to the team’s success, being named to the All-State 2nd Team. The Raiders’ tournament run ended in the quarterfinals against Hollis-Brookline.

Raiders Claim D-III Championship and Multiple Honors

The Lebanon girls’ tennis team achieved the pinnacle of success in Division III, claiming the NHIAA D-III championship in a dramatic comeback victory against Gilford. Trailing 4-2 after singles play, the Raiders rallied to secure the title, avenging their only loss of the season. Beyond the championship, the team was also honored with the sportsmanship award, and head coach Rob Johnstone was named Co-Coach of the Year. Laura Hines and Mariana Utell were both selected for the All-State 1st Team, capping off a remarkable season for the program.

All-State Selection Process

The All-State Team selections are the result of a comprehensive process initiated by coaches nominating players they believe are deserving of recognition. Following the nomination phase, the list is circulated among all coaches, who then cast their votes for 1st and 2nd teams. A weighted voting system is employed, with 1st Team votes worth two points and 2nd Team votes worth one point. The top six vote-getters comprise the 1st Team, while the next six are named to the 2nd Team.

Emphasis on Sportsmanship and Coaching Excellence

The Sportsmanship and Coach of the Year awards are determined through a separate voting process, ensuring impartiality. Coaches are explicitly prohibited from voting for themselves or members of their own teams, upholding the integrity of the selection process. This commitment to recognizing both athletic achievement and ethical conduct underscores the values championed by the New Hampshire Tennis Coaches Association.
