The captain came over and said that there had been an accident and that it wasn’t good and that they recommended that we go ahead and get off the plane.”

Mitcham, a singer and songwriter, described looking out the window and seeing “dark, cloudy smoke emerge into the sky.” Initially unsure of the source, he soon learned the smoke originated from the downed UPS cargo plane. Mitcham, who was en route to London with a connecting flight through Charlotte, North Carolina, for a 10-day tour scheduled to begin Thursday, was forced to rebook his travel for Wednesday afternoon. Despite the disruption to his plans, he expressed profound relief at being safe. “There’s some people lost their lives tonight, and, you know, I’m still here,” Mitcham said. “So no matter what happens, I’m good, and the people on my flight are safe, and it could have been a whole lot worse for us. For those people, it was terrible.”
