Since Wednesday, May 31, 2023, contraband gasoline used by a large part of the population has been experiencing a price spike. This increase follows the decision of the new Nigerian President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to remove fuel subsidies in his country. In Djougou and the surrounding area, the outbidding practiced by local retailers is worrying the populations who are beginning to fear a rise in prices for public transport, zémidjans and basic necessities on our markets.

According to Charif Deen Aboudoulaye, a retailer located on the edge of the Djougou-Savalou interstate road, the price of gasoline has gone from 350 francs to 750 CFA francs or even 900 francs in places. According to this retailer, it is from Nigeria that the price has increased. ”We are also forced to increase the price to earn a little,” he clarified. For Azensi Mabrouk, taxi-motorcycle driver commonly called zémidjan, with this situation of one-upmanship, he underlines, “we have also increased the price for our customers”. Customers are forced to pay more than before. He calls on the President of Benin to do something to save consumers. Currently, more than half of the resellers of contraband petroleum products have had to pack up due to a lack of supply of the precious liquid. As a result, the five state-approved service stations were stormed by consumers with long queues. The latter, overwhelmed by the flow of consumers of contraband gasoline, are trying somehow to meet this strong demand.

According to MT, a gas station attendant who requested anonymity, the stations are not prepared for this prevailing situation. “Currently, our stock is totally exhausted and we probably need two to three weeks to get supplies,” says the attendant.

This Thursday, May 22, 2023, none of the five state-approved service stations in Djougou, capital of the Donga department, has black gold. And this situation has been going on for a week already. Strongly that the competent authorities can take the measure of the situation to quickly reduce this artificial shortage of fuel in service stations.
