Former Guatemalan Congress President Extradited from Mexico

August 8, 2024 – Former President of the Guatemalan Congress, Luis Rabbé, was extradited from Mexico to Guatemala early this Thursday, according to the Ministry of Interior.

The extradition stems from a corruption case ⁣known as “Plazas Fantasma.” Rabbé, who previously represented the UCN and Lider parties in the⁢ Congress, is accused of involvement in the case.

Images released⁤ by‌ the authorities show Rabbé in shackles, being escorted by personnel from the National Civil Police‍ and wearing‍ a black cap covering⁢ his hands. He has been transferred to ‍the Court Tower.

The Public Ministry reported in March 2021⁣ that Mexico had informed Guatemala of their intention to extradite ‌Rabbé. His immunity was stripped in 2016 following a complaint filed alleging his connection to⁣ the “Plazas Fantasma” case. He had previously‍ fled to Mexico shortly before the decision to strip ⁢him of his immunity.

Hugo Fernando García Gudiel⁢ replaced Rabbé in the Congress.
