Colombo: The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has called for the repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act in Sri Lanka.
In neighboring Sri Lanka, the Prevention of Terrorism Act was introduced. Under the law, the police are empowered to arrest suspected terrorists without trial. Tamil and Muslim political parties and organizations continue to accuse the law of being misused.

In this context, the Government of Sri Lanka, the European Union, the United Nations and the Human Rights Council urged the Government to amend the Prevention of Terrorism Act. Following this, some amendments were made to the Prevention of Terrorism Act and the Sri Lankan government tabled a bill in Parliament last week.

In this context, Rohini Marasinghe, Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, said in Colombo that the law was introduced to intimidate those involved in terrorist activities and to take action against them. But, for political retaliation, this law has been used. Thus human rights have been violated. Therefore, without making amendments in the Prevention of Terrorism Act, it should be repealed completely. Thus he said.
