Sophie von der Leyen has married her partner Juan Pablo Brotfeld. The wedding took place under strict security precautions.

She has been a fixture in the German political landscape for more than 20 years. As Federal Minister, Ursula von der Leyen was also responsible for family issues for a long time. The politician’s own family is her top priority: Ursula von der Leyen is a mother of seven. The children she has with her husband Heiko, to whom she has been married for almost 40 years, were born between 1987 and 1999.

Now a big day was upon the 65-year-old: her eldest daughter got married. As “Bild” reports, Sophie said “I do” to her partner Juan Pablo Brotfeld on Saturday in the historic St. Pankratius Church in Burgdorf near Hanover.

In pictures obtained by the newspaper, the 35-year-old can be seen in a white robe with a long train. Her current husband, who dropped his last name and is now also called von der Leyen, wore a classic blue suit. His mother-in-law also chose this color for her dress.

In addition to the politician’s family, the groom’s relatives and friends from his home country of Chile came. A total of 250 guests are said to have attended the wedding – where strict security measures were in place. Due to the political prominence of EU chief Ursula von der Leyen, the wedding took place under police protection. Officers guarded the four entrances to the church and were positioned around the historic building.

According to Bild, after the wedding ceremony, the wedding party went to the nearby von der Leyens’ estate, where the family has lived since 2007. The bride and groom rode in a 300-year-old open carriage pulled by white horses. The celebrations then continued late into the night in a huge white tent.
