Ursula von der Leyen, hours after being elected for a second term as European Commission president on Thursday, demanded that her team work “harder, better, faster” to achieve their goals.

As reported by Day.Az with reference to TASS, the Financial Times (FT) newspaper reported this after studying an email from von der Leyen to EC employees that came into its possession.

She noted that the EU needs to “change gears” to reach a new level. “I count on your experience and professionalism to realize our new ambitions,” the FT quotes an excerpt from the address. Von der Leyen believes that a “new approach to competition policy” is needed, aimed at supporting companies “expanding their activities in global markets,” while not forgetting about the community’s small businesses.

The head of the EC also said that she would ask the governments of member states to name “in the coming weeks” their candidates for various posts in the European Commission, taking into account “gender balance”, with the exception of those who continue to hold positions.

As reported earlier, the European Parliament elected Ursula von der Leyen as the EC President for a second term at a plenary session in Strasbourg. 401 of the 720 members of the EP voted for von der Leyen’s candidacy.

Von der Leyen has been the head of the EC since December 2019. At the meeting, she was criticized by both the right and left opposition, who accused her of failing to fulfill her commitments during her first term, destroying the European economy and failing to take action to combat poverty. At the same time, representatives of the European People’s Party, from which she ran for the post, voted for her election.
