Ursula Von der Leyen’s nuclear plan divides the traffic light coalition – domestic politics

by time news

On New Year’s Eve it was over with the harmony in the traffic light alliance of Olaf Scholz (63). Blame: a “nuclear attack” from Brussels.

Ironically, on New Year’s Eve, when Germany took three of its last six nuclear reactors off the grid, the EU Commission of Ursula von der Leyen (63, CDU) declared nuclear power to be fit for the future: Nuclear power should be included in the list of “sustainable” forms of energy. And gas at the same time!

The EU is splitting the Berlin traffic light into red-yellow and green!

The Green Ministers are in storm: Robert Habeck (52, climate and economy) and Steffi Lemke (53, environment) were outraged that the nuclear power upgrade implemented by France was “absolutely wrong”. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (41) had raised her concerns in Paris and Brussels.

But too late: Ex-Chancellor Merkel and successor Scholz had agreed to the greened nuclear power.

Scholz announced that he would stick to the German nuclear phase-out in 2022. But the FDP makes it clear that this “should not be compensated for by buying up nuclear power from other countries,” said FDP Vice-President Wolfgang Kubicki (69) to BILD.

From economic experts comes harsh criticism of the German nuclear phase-out. The head of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) Prof. Stefan Kooths (52) warns in BILD: Germany is shutting down safe and functional plants, “with new billions”.

Kooths: “But these investments do not create additional growth.” Politicians are lying “in their pockets if they believe that investments will be a growth engine in the foreseeable future”.

FDP Vice Kubicki sees a need for discussion in the government: “We have to find a consensus within the traffic light on how we can achieve the balance between the goals of CO2 reduction and a stable energy supply.” And a swipe in the direction of the Greens: “You are not a good European if you only accept decisions that suit you.”
