Uruguay announced on Monday the hiring of coach Marcelo Bielsa, who replaces Diego Alonso, who was fired from the Uruguayan national team after being eliminated in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup.

Bielsa takes over Celeste in the new cycle for the 2026 World Cup, with a contract that should last until the end of the Qualifiers for the next World Cup, with an automatic renewal in case of qualification for the World Cup.

Thus, Bielsa’s first big test against Uruguay will be in the 2024 Copa America, which will take place in the United States.

This will be the 67-year-old Argentine coach’s first job since leaving the Leeds United, from England, in February 2022. In the Premier League team, Bielsa did a fundamental job for the return and permanence in the elite of English football. However, after a negative streak, which took the team to the relegation zone, he ended up fired.

The experienced coach already has work against national teams on his resume. Between 1998 and 2022, he was in charge of Argentina, where he won an Olympic medal (2004) and, from 2007 to 2011, he coached Chile.

In the last friendlies of Uruguay, Marcelo Broli took over as interim and had a draw, against Japan, and a victory, against South Korea.
