US announces new aid for Rohingyas in Bangladesh

The announcement was made by US Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights Uzra Jaya at an event at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday (September 24).

Later, the United States Department of State issued a press release in this regard.

According to the notification, 70 million dollars of the grant is given by the Department of Population, Refugees and Migration of the US government. The remaining $129 million will be provided by USAID. Of USAID’s $129 million, $78 million will come from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The department will help procure, transport and distribute food to the Rohingya from farmers across the country.

It also said the US aid would help save the lives of Rohingya refugees fleeing violence and persecution from Myanmar. In addition, this aid will act as a buffer in the refugees’ disaster preparedness. It will also provide opportunities for education and skill enhancement. The grant will also encourage refugees to return home sooner.

Since the Rohingya took refuge in Bangladesh in 2017, the United States has sent $2.5 billion in financial aid to Rohingya refugees and locals. Out of this 2.1 billion came to Bangladesh. 1.3 billion of this grant was sent directly from the US government’s Department of Population, Refugees and Migration.

The embassy of the country said that the United States is committed to providing assistance to the crisis-affected population in Bangladesh.
