US authorizes extradition of former president Alejandro Toledo to Peru

The United States has authorized the extradition of former Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006) for crimes of corruption, the Peruvian prosecutor’s office said this Tuesday (21).

“It was informed that the Department of State of the United States of America has granted the extradition of Alejandro Toledo Manrque for the crimes of collusion and money laundering,” the Peruvian Public Prosecutor’s Office said in a message on Twitter.

The prosecution indicates that it is “coordinating” with the “domestic and foreign” authorities for “the execution of the extradition”.

A US resident, Toledo was arrested in July 2019 on corruption charges in his country and lives under house arrest.

Peru accuses him of having received tens of millions of dollars from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in exchange for public works contracts.

Toledo has resided in the United States since leaving the presidency, except for a hiatus in 2011, when he ran for a second term in the presidential elections, being defeated in the first round.

Prosecutors are seeking a prison sentence of 20 years and six months against Toledo, who has admitted that Odebrecht paid at least US$34 million and that he received part of that money, but claims he is innocent and that late businessman Josef Maiman was in charge. of these negotiations, according to the Peruvian press.

Toledo is part of the list of former Peruvian presidents prosecuted or convicted of corruption: Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), Ollanta Humala (2011-2016), Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018), Martn Vizcarra (2018-2020) and Pedro Castillo (2021-2022).
